What is OFTEC?

OFTEC is the UK and Ireland’s leading trade organisation for the heating and cooking industries – and Western Fuel is proudly a part of it.

The Oil Firing Technical Association (OFTEC) was founded in 1991, and its aim is to promote the highest professional and technical standards for technicians and businesses working in the industry and support the needs of heating users.

OFTEC works with businesses like Western Fuel, international standards organisations, training providers, certification bodies and accredited registration schemes.

For customers, employing an OFTEC registered technician is the best guarantee that work on your heating system will be performed to a high level of competence and comply with relevant Building Regulations and manufacturers’ installation requirements.

Safety regulations for oil tank storage in the UK

OFTEC guidelines state the legal guidelines for oil tank storage to ensure the safety of surrounding inhabitants and the environment:

• 8 metres away from non-fire rated eaves of a building
• 8 metres away from a non-fire rated building or structure (e.g., garden sheds)
• 8 metres away from openings (e.g., doors and windows) in a fire-rated building or structure (brick-built house/garage)
• 8 metres away from oil fired appliance flue terminals
• 760mm away from a non-fire rated boundary such as a wooden boundary fence
• 600mm away from screening (e.g., trellis and foliage) that does not form part of the boundary
