Once we’re well and truly immersed in the colder months of winter, there’s often nothing better than coming home to a warm cosy house after a long day and getting comfy on the sofa.

For some people, cosy comfort might be as simple as changing into some pyjamas and whacking the heating on, but if you want to make your living room feel warm and inviting, there are plenty of style tricks that can help.

From adding more textures to introducing softer lighting, see below for four ways you can turn your living room into a properly cosy space.

Mix up your textures

As well as providing physical warmth, one of the easiest ways to create a cosy atmosphere is by using thick, plush textures like velvet, fake fur, sheepskin and wool.

Try velvet curtains (which will help to insulate the room too) and a texture mix of cushions, wool rugs and fake fur or sheepskin throws.

Use rich warm colours

Using deep, rich colours like burgundy, mustard yellow, purple or dark green all help a room to feel cosier and more inviting.

If you’re worried that all-over dark walls might be too much, try adding one feature wall, or use these colours in accessories such as cushions, rugs, curtains or ornaments. Jewel colours look even more opulent and warm when paired with deep charcoal greys or gold accents.

Soft lighting

The right lighting is key to creating a cosy atmosphere, and harsh, bright overhead lights aren’t going to cut it.

Cast a warm glow with dimmable lights, or switch off the overhead lights altogether and use a series of lamps and candles. If you want to go all out, then there’s nothing cosier than the warm glow of an open fire, and there are many different sizes and styles to suit all tastes.

Keep the heat in

A cold draught is the quickest way to ruin a cosy room, not to mention the money wasted on heat escaping.

Use thick curtains to insulate windows and add draught excluders if there are gaps underneath doors. If you want a more permanent investment, adding double glazing is one of the best ways to maintain heat.
